Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)
“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart”. Nelson Mandela
INTENT
Learning a foreign language is a necessary part of being a member of a multi-cultural society. Through our teaching of French, as well as through links to History and Geography we aim to:
- Foster children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the wider world, developing their awareness of cultural similarities and differences.
- Introduce young children to another language in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating, developing an interest in learning other languages as well.
- Provide an appropriate balance of spoken and written language which will lay the foundations for further learning in KS3.
IMPLEMENTATION
Our curriculum is designed to progressively develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as developing children’s awareness of cultural differences and similarities.
Children in KS2 will have regular French lessons where they are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through a multi-sensory approach including singing activities, games and conversational work. As their confidence and skill grows, children record their work through pictures, captions and sentences.
We use ‘Rigolo’ to support our teaching of French in Yr 3 and “Salut” in Yr4, 5 and 6. Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics.
IMPACT
Our MFL curriculum will ensure all pupils develop key language learning skills as well as a love of language and learning about other cultures. Teachers ensure lessons are fun and interactive to enable key development of skills to take place so that they are well placed and inspired to continue to learn another language in the next stage of their education.
